A Thrilling Spooky-Tacular Halloween Adventure

A Thrilling Spooky-Tacular Halloween Adventure at Virginia Beach KOA

On a chilly Fall night in Virginia Beach, Virginia, a spooky full moon, on October 31st, stretched shadows eerily across the land. Halloween night 2020 was already anticipated, due to Covid-19, to be unusual and in many cities across the country, canceled altogether. Even the full moon was an unusual one, not a surprise for the craziness of 2020, but a great treat for the scattering of trick-or-treaters that braved the candy-gathering landscape during the pandemic. A rare blue moon, the second full moon seen in the month of October, fell on Halloween for the first time in just shy of twenty years, but it only added to the excitement of our Halloween adventure.

We decided to forego the traditional Halloween night activities and instead took up residence for a few days at Virginia Beach KOA located at 1240 General Booth Blvd. Virginia Beach, Virginia 23451. From October 30th through the 31st, KOA celebrated its annual Halloween/Fall Festival and we were thrilled to celebrate it with them.

Kicking off the festivities on Friday night, KOA began with arts and crafts for the kids and rolled into Saturday with a vast array of fun-filled activities including The Teeny Tiny Farm Petting Zoo, a Pumpkin Patch with Paint Stations to decorate the pumpkin you chose (for free I must add), as well as a photo booth where you could take memorable family photos. There was also free kettle corn, balloon animals, temporary tattoos, Halloween crafts, and lots of fun games including ladder ball, gaga ball, Bocce ball, ping pong, corn hole, etc. There was also an awesome adult cornhole tournament with some great prizes. All of this was nicely gift-wrapped with live music by country artist and guitarist, Tim Hopkins. These daytime activities, of course, warmed up all the attendees for the superb Halloween evening events.

Campers decorated not only their typical vehicles for a big trunk-or-treat fun fest, but they also, very creatively, decorated their golf carts. Young trick-or-treaters were welcomed by a lot of candy-giving participants to fill their treat bags. It was highly successful for all the costumed children.

The evening was capped off with a fantastic glow party and costume contest. With a live DJ, dancing, free glow sticks for all, and a community bonfire, there was something for everyone. There were also dancing dinosaurs. Really. Dancing t-rex, came out of extinction to bust a move to the Electric Slide and the Macarena, among other party hits.

The costume contest, with four age categories including one for adults, and great prizes awarded to many different winners and runners-up, was a ton of fun. Of course, it all went to the dogs by the end of the competition. No, really, they had a costume contest for the dogs too…”Chicken and Waffles” took the grand prize.

All in all, the entire Halloween experience at Virginia Beach KOA was outstanding. Lots of smiles, lots of laughs, and lots of great memories were made, ok and yes plenty of s’mores – Kudos to KOA for a job well done. Adventure perfected!

Speaking of Virginia Beach KOA, what a great campground. Winners of the 2020 President’s Award and the 2020 Founder’s Award they offer something for everyone’s level of stay and play – From water and electric tent sites, full hookups to upgraded deluxe patio RV sites, cute rustic camping cabins to deluxe cabins (4, 6 and 8 people) with full baths.

If recreational activities are what you’re looking for well they have it all…A zipline park ($), two pools, a huge jumping pillow and bounce pad, volleyball, basketball, a playground, a community bonfire and event pavilion, giant waterslide, fire pit, giant chess game, horseshoes, as well as the before mentioned games: bocce ball, gaga ball, ping pong, corn hole, and ladder ball. The Bike Shack also offers bikes, electric bikes, beach cruisers, pedal carts, and golf cart rentals ($). There is also the Kamp K9 Dog Park, laundry facility, phone charging stations, and free Wi-Fi. In the Summer months, you can enjoy the two swimming pools, the giant inflatable slide, a trolley ride to the beach ($), and multiple special activities for all ages. If beaching it is more your style, Virginia Beach KOA is only 2.5 miles from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, as well as a short drive to Sandbridge Beach, Croatan Beach (a surfer’s choice), and Chesapeake Bay Beach.

In conclusion, KOA says it best, “Basecamp for the Great Outdoors. Whether you’re exploring the local area or hanging out at the campground, KOA Holidays are an ideal place to relax and play. There’s plenty to do, with amenities and services to make your stay memorable. Bring your family, bring your friends, or bring the whole group – there’s plenty of ways to stay and explore.”
